Introduction. Celiac disease is a chronic disease with worldwide distribution. The concepts of empowerment and quality of life become relevant in the person-centered health approach to chronic diseases.
Aim. To determine the degree of empowerment and quality of life in adults with celiac disease in El Salvador, as well as the correlation between both measures.
Material and methods. Descriptive cross-sectional study. Salvadoran adults with a biopsy-confirmed diagnosis of celiac disease were surveyed online. Sociodemographic and clinical data were required from the participants. A validated empowerment questionnaire in Spanish for people with chronic diseases was used. No specific empowerment questionnaire for people with celiac disease is available. A specific validated quality of life questionnaire in Spanish for people with celiac disease was also used.
Results. 36 participants were included in the study, 86,1% females, with a mean time since diagnosis of 12,28 ± 15,63 years. 75% reported a strict adherence to the gluten-free diet. The mean empowerment score was 184,28 ± 19,94 out of 235 points and the mean quality of life score was 68,03 ± 17,49 out of 100 points. Pearson's correlation between empowerment and quality of life was positive and statistically significant (r=0,546; p-value=0,001). Salvadoran adults with celiac disease have a good level of empowerment and a fair level of quality of life.
Conclusion. There is a moderate positive correlation between empowerment and quality of life in adults with celiac disease from El Salvador.
