La pancreatitis aguda constituye una de las principales causas de ingresos hospitalarios por patología gastrointestinal a nivel mundial, con un incremento de su incidencia en los últimos años y un gran impacto costo-sanitario. Se trata de un proceso inflamatorio del páncreas de inicio brusco, acompañado de dolor abdominal, náuseas y vómitos. Las etiologías más comunes son la litiasis biliar y el consumo abusivo de alcohol, existiendo causas menos frecuentes. Su diagnóstico se basa en el cumplimiento de al menos dos de tres criterios: dolor abdominal típico, elevación de amilasa o lipasa tres veces por encima del límite superior de la normalidad, y/o hallazgos de imagen compatibles. Su evolución puede variar de formas leves con rápida resolución a cuadros graves que pueden derivar en complicaciones tanto locales como sistémicas, pudiendo desarrollarse un fallo multiorgánico. Esta entidad tiene un importante impacto en la morbilidad y la mortalidad; esta última se da en entre el 24% de los casos leves y hasta el 50% en casos graves. No existe un tratamiento específico para la PA, por lo que su manejo se basa en medidas de soporte y abordaje de la causa subyacente para evitar nuevos episodios.
