Abstract

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of chronic disorders of the gastrointestinal tract characterized by phases of inflammatory activity alternating with phases of disease remission. IBD has a course that is difficult to predict, with no tendency to spontaneous cure.1,2 There are 3 main subtypes: Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC) and colitis not yet classified. In CD the most frequent location is the ileocecal and it usually presents an inflammatory pattern at the beginning that evolves into a stenosing or fistulizing pattern, given its transmural nature, with the need for surgery in up to 80% of patients. UC, limited to the mucosa and submucosa of the colon, usually presents with superficial lesions and extends from the rectum proximally. Unclassified colitis presents features of both entities and it is not possible to define its nature.3
